KINETICS® HighTones Wood Diffusers combine the visual warmth of natural hardwood with acoustical diffuser design based on quadratic theory. They are used to create sound-diffusing wall finishes that scatter high-frequency sound reflections across a listening space, helping preserve acoustic brilliance without relying only on absorption.
Acoustic Performance & Sound Control
In critical listening environments, acoustical reflection is often required to support music clarity, speech intelligibility, and a more natural listening experience. High-frequency sound can be easily absorbed by curtains, fabric-covered seating, and occupants’ clothing, so controlled diffusion is often used to maintain clarity and reduce unwanted flutter echo. HighTones Diffusers are designed to produce diffuse scattering of high-frequency sound, with diffusion beginning at approximately 3150 Hz and continuing into higher audible frequencies based on testing referenced to AES-4id2001.
Construction & Design
HighTones Wood Diffusers are manufactured from 4″ wide hardwood planks, grooved into a sequence of sound-scattering wells with varying depths. These grooved channels are arranged in seven elevations based on quadratic theory and the work of German acoustician M.R. Schroeder. The planks are installed side by side so the well sequence repeats across a wider wall area, creating a continuous architectural diffuser finish.
Material & Installation
The product is composed of 1″ thick hardwood, with the wood type and finish selected by the designer. HighTones Diffusers are available in 4″ widths and varying lengths, with a typical maximum length of 96″, depending on the selected wood species. Custom shapes are available, and an optional slotted back can be provided where added sound absorption is required. Installation is carried out by attaching the panels with finish nails into wood furring behind each panel.
Wood Finish Considerations
As a natural wood acoustic product, HighTones may vary in color, grain pattern, appearance, and texture. Wood is hydroscopic and may shrink or expand with changes in humidity, which should be considered during design, installation, and project coordination. The product is Made in USA.
